As an arts event photographer in Cape Town, photographing the exclusive evening hosted by YourLuxury Africa alongside Strauss & Co was a great opportunity.
This beautiful event, held on March 20, 2025, celebrated the talented South African dancer, Siphesihle November, bringing together art, culture, and achievement right here in Cape Town.
The venue, the incredible gallery space at Strauss & Co, provided a fantastic backdrop full of art. As the arts event photographer for this Cape Town gathering, my approach was mainly observational. I aimed to capture relaxed, candid moments reflecting the evening’s true spirit. While some group shots were posed, my main goal was to capture the atmosphere – the intimate setting, the elegant decor, the warm interactions – documenting the event as it unfolded naturally.
Highlighting A Star
The evening celebrated Siphesihle November, principal dancer of the National Ballet of Canada and YourLuxury Africa’s March cover star. His return to South Africa added special significance. Capturing the genuine warmth from hosts like Bina Genovese of Strauss & Co and the excitement among the guests was key to telling the night’s story through arts event photography.
Capturing Expression
A definite highlight was the insightful panel discussion with Siphesihle November, guided by arts journalist Debbie Hathway. This was a fantastic chance to capture genuine expression. Siphesihle uses body language effectively to convey his passion, and my focus as the arts event photographer was on capturing these dynamic moments – his gestures, thoughtful expressions, and the engaged audience. These candid shots often show the depth and energy of the conversation best.
Documenting Leaders
The guest list showed the event’s importance, bringing together influential figures from South Africa’s vibrant arts scene. Directors, choreographers, artists, and curators like Debbie Turner, Nacho Duato, Mandisi Dyantyis, Khanyisile Mbongwa, and Ronald Muchatuta all attended. Observing and discreetly photographing the natural interactions – shared laughter, engaged discussions, quiet connections – was crucial for providing a complete picture. This is a key part of arts event photography in Cape Town – capturing the people who make the scene vibrant.
Details Through the Lens
The seamless hospitality, with fine wines from Delaire Graff and Moedi Wines and a beautiful harvest table, added to the sophisticated ambiance. Documenting these details helps illustrate the event’s overall quality.
